Our October event “Inspiring Young People in Kingston Upon Thames” has been sponsored by the National Lottery and is supported by Kingston Council and many other government funded organisations within the borough.

We will be bringing together a range of young people from different socio-demographic backgrounds, inspiring them to work together in harmony to create an amazing performance and allowing them to experience something different. Through the discipline and art of Capoeira we will help to truly bring about community cohesion.

The event includes a week packed of exciting Capoeira workshops and subsequent weekly lessons of the art. At the end of the week of workshops those who have taken part will showcase what they have learnt in a Capoeira show that will be hosted for the local community, family and friends in the Kingston College theatre.

The workshops themselves will focus on all aspects of the art and will include teaching the following:

Capoeira: The basic defensive, attack, and escape movements used in Capoeira so students will be able to create basic sequences in the performance.

Music: This is a very important aspect of Capoeira and these lessons will concentrate on teaching young people the basics of the percussion instruments used in Capoeira how to play simple rhythms and songs.

Acrobatics: Acrobatics are used in Capoeira to show agility and skill. In these lessons students will be taught basic acrobatic movements and how to include these in their performance game.

Dance: Capoeira has important links to a variety of Afro-Brazilian cultural dances for both men and women! In these lessons students will be taught the history and basic steps of a famous folkloric dance.

History/Culture: The art of Capoeira is stepped in rich history. Young people will be taught about the plight of early Capoeira Mestre’s in a way which relates to more recent times and issues.

Please arrive AT LEAST 20 min BEFORE each of the workshops so we can start and finish on time.
